What is BRIX ?

The Building Research Index (BRIX) is a quarterly survey of the outlook for building and construction . It is based on the sentiments expressed by member firms of the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors. The survey is collected quarterly in all Australian states and territories. The survey monitors information on the prospects for building activity and price movements, and has in the past proved a reliable indicator of construction activity.

The BRIX  survey has now been running nationally since 2001. Up until September 2002 the surveys were collected by email and fax, but since then the survey has be collected using a web-based interface.

This provides a number of advantages over the traditional paper-based methods, including faster analysis of results, and better quality control of the data collected . The national BRIX committee Coordinator Dr. Anthony Mills said “the new approach should allow the AIQS to have a better control over the security of the data. Special checks and balances have been incorporated into the on-line survey which will ensure that fewer errors occur,”.

The survey collection forms are turned on at the start of each quarter, all respondent firms are then be given a code to access the on-line survey.
